I have so many things I want to write about in the up and coming year, so of course I wait until the day before I return to work before picking any of them up.
Procrastination or delayed gratification? I’m not sure, however there’s a degree of sweet torment to both.
I do believe in 2012 I’m going to be forthright in the things I do and say. I’ve had the best part of a year away from things, and I do think it’s time to come back and start putting my money where my mouth is and actually deliver on the things I’ve been promising for the best part of two years. Of course now the hard part is doing the work and actually delivering. Ah well, I shall just have to follow the maxim ‘Real developers ship’…
Reflection aside 2012 is proving it has some mettle already, which is good because hell’s teeth 2011 proved to be gruelling in a number of regards. Let us see then if 2012 can make good on its promises and I’m not just been lulled by what’s in the left hand as the knife glints in the right. Distrusting? Me? Well yes I admit to that, and it’s a trait I do need to move away from in part. Distrusting may protect me from the hurt that life can bring, it also protects me from the wonder. I think Neil Gaiman said it best really (he would, he’s a proper writer, I’m a cheeky wordy gobshite with a blog
):
“I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes.
Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and more importantly, you’re Doing Something.
So that’s my wish for you, and all of us, and my wish for myself. Make New Mistakes. Make glorious, amazing mistakes. Make mistakes nobody’s ever made before. Don’t freeze, don’t stop, don’t worry that it isn’t good enough, or it isn’t perfect, whatever it is: art, or love, or work or family or life.
Whatever it is you’re scared of doing, Do it.
Make your mistakes, next year and forever.”
And indeed, echoing the “changing your world”, you may know I’m a fan of this quote:
Bugger this. I want a better world.
—Jenny Sparks
Be that the world external to me, or the world I have inside myself, the same applies. As much as better is a very subjective term, better is an iterative process. Make improvement, compare to previous, assess, implement and continue. My plan for 2012 is to build on the foundations laid in 2011, and actually get stuff done.
For now though I shall resist the urge to implant my current ear worm (it involves your great great great grand-daughter), drink my tea and get ready for 2012.
Night night all.
