2012, a year.
31 December 2012 21:30
2012 has been a funny old year, one of highs, lows and a lot of self reflection.
It started with an act of self-preservation, one that hurt me deeply. The flip side was there was a silver lining to that cloud, and I do not regret my actions one little bit.
2012 also saw the year where I finally admitted I was depressed. I talked to the GP, was prescribed anti-depressants and started to take a cold hard look at my life and what had lead me to this place again. Nearly a year on I have some answers, and some indication of what to do next, however like all things it’s not guaranteed and I still have to take the first risky step in enacting my plan.
Work proved a pain, I finally realised just how unhappy the career path I was on had made me, although I annoyed several people along the way in the way I was exploring that. I also found that mental health issues in the workplace are still misunderstood, and people just don’t know how to manage those with depression.
Foolishly I took on more than I could chew in starting up in freelancing and also taking over as editor of polytical. I have had to put anything not focussed on bringing in income and keeping the HMRC happy to one side. Apologies to all who have been wondering what’s been going on there.
2012 has also been the year teeny bean chose to make his presence known. Stealth baby that he is. He’s come as a surprise to all involved, however quite the happy one, and I find myself thinking of lots of things I need to do. I must admit that I’m also planning to use ‘speaking as a parent’ at least once inappropriately and out of context. I know some of my chums disapprove of ‘breeders’, I shall be doing my utmost not to let impending parenthood become the sole focus of my life.
The tail end of this year has been less than silver lined, ill health has plagued me, and even now I still don’t feel 100%. I’m hoping it is just post viral fatigue as my GP suspects and not anything else. Regardless I shall be doing my best to keep on top of things and keeping the various plates I have spinning.
In analysis, 2012 has been a multi-faceted year. It has consisted of ups, downs and one or two sideways movements. I think over all I’d award it a C+, 2013 has a lot to build upon and I shame be aiming for a B+/A- minimum.
Happy new year’s eve all, have a mug of tea on me.
