Geeklesque
6 August 2011 15:30Oh GenCon you never fail to delight and amuse me!
Having ended the first day succesfully with gamers, dice and filk, it was of course time to go out again. You see, what marks this GenCon as different as the others I’ve attended is that this time I’ve booked onto events. A shocking turn of events I know, but times are changing and I felt it was time to actually attend things.
So Friday Chris and I booked tickets for the glitter guild burleesque.
Burlesque is big in the US. We have a burgeoning scene in the UK, but here it’s huge. So huge they’re able to successfully subdivide it into sub categories. Categories like geeklesque. Geeklesque is amazing it has to be said, I mean come on, developing routines that incorporate pretty much every geek meme and theme you can thnk of? Wow, you have to give some serious brownie points for that. So we had routines based on firefly/serenity, great cthulhu, thundercats, heck the penultimate routine even had a random encounter table… I have to say don’t think I’ve laughed so much at how great the routines are. Oh, and did I mention the boylesque…
Day two of the con saw me pulling some booth duty and selling exile’s new game dead fellas to people. if you’re at GenCon and fancy a look, come by booth 605 and we’ll give you a demo.
I also did some major shopping yesterday. I had a firm shopping list for the con and so far I’ve stuck to it, the only major splurges being a utilikilt (although found the one I grabbed was too big, have had to take it back today
) and also a very nice engineer’s shirt.
Game wise, the big release at the con for me was Airship Pirates. I hadn’t realised it was close to release so was really happy to discover Cubicle 7 had it for sale! Happiness abounded when I managed to get my hot little hands on one of the 50 copies they had. Have I ha a chance to read it yet? Um, no…this is GenCon there’s always something going on and I’m probably missing a stack taking the time out to blog this.
By the end of yesterday I was quite a bit lighter in terms of money, quite a lot achier in terms of body but a whole lot happier in terms of soul for having been here. My one major regret is that my snoring is keeping my room mates awake.
I knew I’d put on a lot of weight over the last three years, but evidently it’s enough for my undead snoring to start again. I think tonight shall see me on the pull out bed to save my friends from sleep deprivation.
At mid way through the con, things are good, I’v one more seminar to attend but no White Wolf party. Seems White Wolf aren’t throwing caution to the wind and funding the excesses of old. Instead they’re starting their own con and there may be a hotel room party happening by strict invitation only. Everyone has professed disappointment at this as the White Wolf party is one of the high points of the con where everyone gets to meet up, let their hair down and have a fun evening. A shame that won’t be the case this time.
However, things are great, it’s fab to hang with friends, talk gaming, gossip and I’ve ven gained a new adversary and I’m not yet halfway through thee trip.
Having paused to share news and gossip with you all, the time has come for me to head out into the breach once more…wish me luck and should I not return-AVENGE ME!
